Mauritius Marine Conservation Society – MMCS

ABOUT US

The Mauritius Marine Conservation Society (MMCS) is a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) which has been operating for more than 40 years in Mauritius, focusing on the education about and conservation of the marine environment in Mauritius as well as the development of underwater archaeology in the Southwest Indian Ocean region.

Introduction

We are actively working to raise awareness amongst the people of Mauritius of the rich marine resource, and the preservation of underwater heritage sites.

We are constantly striving at moving forward with our various programmes in research, public awareness and conservation, towards achieving a healthy marine environment and preserved Underwater Cultural Heritage sites for the long-term prosperity of Mauritius and its people.

Our motto: “Conservation through Education”. The main objective is to promote awareness and appreciation of marine life, an interest in the need for marine conservation, as well as to develop underwater archaeological research in Mauritius.

Our Partners

Thank you to our financial partners without whom the projects wouldn’t have been possible.

The UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme is a unique international body. It is a financial mechanism to support and promote all initiatives as well as community works aimed at facing major environmental problems in the world. Its mission and management represent innovative solutions to the support of the mandate of the 21st Agenda for the Earth Summit of 1992 which was held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Involved since 1992 in supporting research, rehabilitation and educational programmes in the field of marine life, the Total Foundation for biodiversity and the sea in collaboration with Total Mauritius, provides continuous support to the MMCS in all its actions towards sustainable management of marine resources, especially the cetaceans and coral reefs.

We also thank our institutional partner:

The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), a regional organisation created by the “Accord de Cooperation de Victoria” in 1984, consists of five member countries: the Comoros Islands, France (Reunion Island), Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles. Its main objective is the promotion of sustainable co-development of the islands located in the south-west of the Indian Ocean which it defends in international forums on matters pertaining to ecology, economy and culture. It develops activities in the economic sector (consideration of the region in the world economy), in the environmental field (namely marine and coastal) , on animal and vegetal resources, in the protection of populations (social security, children`s rights, public health) and finally in the cooperation of cultural, academic and research works.
