Marine Mammals

Following the development of the Dolphin Watching activity on the west coast of the island (estimated to generate around 120 million rupees (3,000,000 Euros) annually), the MMCS put forward a long term plan to protect the coastal marine resources.

In order to achieve this objective, the project included several components:

  • Education and training of the operators as well as the general public on good observation practices to minimize disturbance of the marine mammals in Mauritian waters.
  • Contributing to increasing scientific knowledge on the resident dolphin species through a behavioural and population study.
  • Helping local authorities in developing an adequate legislation for sustainable management of the Dolphin Watching activity.
